Holiday Papercrafting

The Norfolk Hub, Station Place, Norfolk, CT

Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., 10/26, 11/2, 11/23, 12/14

Leslie Watkins will present a series of adult watercolor and papercrafting classes in time for the holidays at The Hub, including handmade Halloween and Thanksgiving Treat Boxes, Place Cards, Christmas cards, Tags and Gift Boxes. These classes are perfect for beginners who would like to add something creative to their holiday celebrations.

There is a $35 materials charge for each class, or $99 or all four. Pre-registration is required.

Leslie Watkins is a fine artist specializing in landscape oils and botanical watercolors. Watkins has exhibited her work in NYC, Japan, and throughout New England. Her books “Decorative Gift Boxes”, “Floral Gift Labels” and “Holiday Gift Labels” were published by Dover Press. She presents popular watercolor painting and papercrafting workshops throughout the year.

Join Leslie Watkins, for a two-part art workshop that’s sure to enhance your day. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or seasoned artist. You deserve a relaxing time with all day coffee, tea and treats in a friendly environment. Start the day practicing a simple alphabet using traditional tools and walnut ink you’ll mix yourself. Break for a delicious lunch catered by chef Theresa Cannavo, including vegan and gluten-free options. Theresa won the “Crazy for Cookies Challenge” on the Food Network.

In the afternoon paint with Leslie Watkins and learn useful tips to help you get started on your creative journey. Leslie is a fine artist specializing in nature based watercolors and has a loyal following as a gifted instructor. Leslie Watkins will demonstrate the making and decorating of a nature journal that can be used for writing and watercolor sketches. Sara Frieze will demonstrate the art of origami, using decorative papers to make cranes and other animals. Various projects will be on display.

Ancient manuscripts are filled with beautiful examples of floral decorations often accompanied by butterflies, dragonflies and other insects. This workshop will present examples of decorative art from the 16th century Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta which combines calligraphy with natural imagery. Students will gain an appreciation of the methods of illumination and have fun while doing so. Instruction in the basics of insect anatomy and how to begin painting a butterfly in watercolor will be given. Students will learn simple methods of transferring and combining designs to calligraphic layouts. Students may bring a calligraphy project to decorate.

Learn how to construct an art journal using readily available materials. Journaling is a powerful tool when used to identify and visualize your goals and aspirations. The books can be used to hold momentos, photos, as travel diaries or nature journals. Each one is unique to the maker. The use of bookbinding tools and materials will be demonstrated, including watercolor and calligraphy. Leslie Watkins is a fine artist, writer and gardener whose work is inspired by nature.

In this two session workshop you will gain a thorough understanding of the tools, methods and uses for the art of papercrafting. Join artist Leslie Watkins as she demonstrates skills and techniques used to make beautiful, creative gifts for the holidays and every day. $20. materials fee per class.


•Session 1, October 20th: Introduction to Papercrafting

Using a variety of simple tools and skills you will learn how to create professional looking notecards, gift boxes and tags that you will be proud to give or keep for yourself. All tools and materials are supplied with plenty of hands on instruction and helpful demonstrations.


•Session 2, November 17th: Introduction to Watercolor

Building on skills learned in the papercrafting workshop you will learn to paint in watercolor to decorate Christmas cards and ornaments, easy projects that anyone can do with all materials supplied. These workshops are appropriate for everyone, beginners and accomplished artists alike. You will leave inspired with new skills and plenty of ideas!

The National Iron Bank in Norfolk CT presents an exhibition of Leslie Watkins’ nature prints from October 30th through December 30th, 2017. The illustrations are featured in the Norfolk, CT publication Norfolk Now and accompany Watkins’ monthly gardening column Through the Garden Gate. The column discusses a wide array of garden and nature subjects ranging from the practical to the philosophical.

Leslie Watkins’ botanical watercolors and nature studies have appeared internationally on postage stamps, and in books, magazines and fine home products. She has taught enthusiastic students for over 25 years. Both aspiring and experienced painters benefit from the classes and have fun learning. Watkins has exhibited at The Columbus Museum, The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, The National Arts Club and The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the New England Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. She is the founding director of the NWCT Berkshire Plein Air Painters.
